You can add a via point - click anywhere on the route then select “Add via point” - and then drag it anywhere you like.

I have an Edge Touring and usually download the GPX track, then connect the Edge to my computer via USB and copy the file across to the “NewFiles” directory. Not sure how you’d do this on Android but it should be possible - maybe you can put the SD card in your phone?

It is possible to transfer files from an android device directly to a GPS unit such as a Garmin. (I use a wahoo). The principle is that the phone sees the device as an external hard disk and you can transfer files over and back the same way you would on a p.c.

It may not be straightforward, but it is possible.

You will need an OTG (OnTheGo) cable, an adapter cable to convert a usb to a micro/mini usb (depends on your device) and possibly some new file manager app on your android device.

Thanks for the link to that bike forum.  I read it and tried to understand it, but my technical knowledge is way less than that.  I really am an elderly novice, who loves cycling touring.  I managed to conquer preparing the route on cycle travel, and then to download the gpx file on to Garmin connect and then to my device, but only using the p.c. with a USB connection.  I am totally lost at anything more technical and will have to just despair as I can't understand the jargon.

Liz, it's a pity it's too complex for you. I thought that too, at the start. If you know someone with a bit more confidence they may be able to help. (It actually is easier with a Garmin than other devices, I believe). A decent electronics shop should be able to give you the right adapter cable. After that, it's probably just a file manager app you'll need. I use ES File Explorer. A few pounds for the cable and you're ready to try.

But all is not lost!

Unless you are heading away for months, there is no reason why you can't make multiple versions of your route and choose the most appropriate one on the day. (Good naming will be important!) That will cover the "big" sections from town to town,  but won't be a lot of help directing you to campsites etc. You'd need separate routes for those. But I would imagine that those distances would be shorter.

It's a lot more planning, but it can take a lot of the stress away on the road.

You know your exact needs, so you can decide what's  best.

I do this all the time. If I have a specific destination I have to be, I'll create several routes ending at that place. I cycle pretty much as I please, then when I need to get to my destination, I look for the closest pre-planned route to my destination, load it, navigate my own way to it, then follow it.

What a great thread. Even though my Edge 810 supports bluetooth I'm interested in trying the On the Go cable method. I've just aquired an android phone so will be trying it out soon. I'll write it up so don't give up yet Liz.

Wondering if it m be possible for Hobbes to give a step by step on how to move the route/file from the Android to the File Manager to the Garmin??

I can't do a step by step for the simple reason I do not have a Garmin and there are a variety of factors to consider from what Garmin unit to what phone and what android system.

It can be quite finnicky to get it to work, but once you know, you know.

However, it only really comes into play when you want to plan routes totally offline and transfer them to your phone, again with no cell/internet coverage.

I will continue to play around with it
