I've done a route in south wales and want to use the Llansteffan to Ferryside Ferry (having checked the tides!).  But i can't manage to persuade the system to not take me via Carmarthen ....  I could of course split the route into two journeys, before and after ferries but ....

I have already amended the route to include the Gower!  just focus on the Carmarthen bit ...

Ann, I'm a bit confused by your route. First things first, you have a viapoint placed in Camarthen so CT will route you through there.

You seem to be using the 'direct to' feature bit I'm not sure it's correct. My suggestion would be to place a viapoint on each side of the ferry crossing, say VP 1 & VP2. The using 'Direct to' connect VP1 to Vp2.

That should simplify things.

I think that what is happening is that the ferry is not showing up in OSM and therefore CT isn't using it. It's being conservative and as someone who cheerfully pulled up to a Dutch ferry crossing only to find that the next ferry was in about 3 months I tend to agree with such an approach :-)

Here is a quick edit of your route using the ferry and ignoring Camarthen:

By coincidence, I’ve also been plotting a route to/from Tenby and hit the same issue, but since the ferry runs for at most 45 minutes either side of the tide, I agree that the conservative approach is best here!

My trip is too far away to think about timings, but I plotted a “direct to” link as HobbesOnTour suggests.

Thanks both - i did spot and delete the via in Camarthen (though possibly didn't save it).  Will try the direct to link.  I have checked the ferry times and we are lucky that it should be running about 3pm that day so i'm not too worried about having to do the longer route ... Fingers crossed.
