If I export a route to Garmin Connect, then to the Edge 830, will the Garmin now use the OSM maps from cycle.travel, instead of its own maps? I am in Canada, and am wondering if I really need to buy the Garmin Europe maps for a UK tour. Will the Garmin simply use the OSM map I just sent over?

You do need a map in your Edge as what is sent over is the route, not the map. However, you do not need to buy a map of Europe. You can get free maps which work fine. I use them on my Edge 530.
