Patreon payments

Hi Richard,

I have just received an email with the following message:

Your payment for cycle.travel failed to go through

Your membership will expire on Feb 1, 2025 because your payment method (Visa ending in 4639) couldn't be processed. To keep your membership, update your payment method in your membership settings by Feb 3, 2025.

My Visa card does not end 4639. There is a link to click on, but as this has the potential to be a scam I haven't done so. Previous payments have gone through with my current card for over a year.

Any advice?

Martin

Downloaded tcx files

When you download a tcx file there is an option to set the distance that directions appear before a turn. The default is 30m, but I  prefer more warning and have set it to 100m. However, it then disappears some distance before the turn and I don't always notice it, especially in noisy traffic. Is it possible to alter when that instruction disappears from the screen? Ideally I would like to be able to set a time for it to remain on the screen or to set a distance for it to go, probably relating to the turn.

I realise that there are other ways on the Edge to get directions, but doing it this way I get cycle.travel cues which are better than the ones generated by passing the course through Garmin Connect.

Elevation mystery

Hi Richard. I've just come across something that I find quite strange.

If I look at the elevation in this route, https://cycle.travel/map/journey/523927 there is a maximum gradient of 14% between via points  14 and 15.

Now if I remove three earlier via points, 10, 11 and 12 the maximum gradient changes to 8.7%. Points 14 and 15 which have now become 11 and 12 are unchanged. Not only that but the maximum gradient has moved to a part of the course that was on the first version. The second version  is https://cycle.travel/map/journey/602116

I know that you spend a fair amount of time adjusting the way the elevation works so I wondered if this quirk was something you might like to take a look at.

Thanks, as always, for all your hard work. I started using cycle.travel around four years ago and it keeps getting better.

Route summary predicted times

When a route is created there is a summary giving distance and then in brackets a time. The time appears to be based on an average speed which is entered in the user profile. In most cases this is reasonably accurate and, for me, in hilly Devon and 65 years old, 12 mph is usually fairly accurate. But if I have a route climbing Alpe d'Huez then 40 minutes is not an accurate prediction and even in Devon rides can feature more or less elevation. I realise that there are other factors involved, road surface for example, but would it be possible to get the predicted times to consider elevation? I'm wondering if in the profile a user could enter data from a couple of rides giving distance, elevation and time taken. This could then be used to make predicted times more accurate?

Thank you for all the work you do which I believe has made  cycle.travel the best tool for planning a ride.

Maps for Garmin edge

I hope nobody minds me asking a Garmin question rather than a cycle travel one, but this forum seems to provide helpful answers and I am not sure where else to turn.

I have always downloaded maps for my edge 530 from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ as it's easy, up to date and I can get a map of the area I want rather than the whole of Europe which Garmin provide through the annual updates. However, when I tried to do this a couple of weeks ago, I got put in a queue of over 600 days. Thinking this was a mistake I waited, but it appears that something is wrong as no email has arrived telling me it is ready to download. It also appears that downloads now have to be of entire countries rather than smaller user generated areas.

I would be most grateful if someone could tell me if there is a way to make this site work or let me know of other sites with free routable maps, preferably with a cycling layer. My main concern is file formats. I worry about putting something inappropriate in my edge and finding I no longer have a map.

And, while I am here, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Richard for cycle travel and the continual improvements he is making to it. I particularly like having elevation in feet as I am somewhat old fashioned.
