Anybody know how to contact Richard and tell him the servers are continuously "Internal Server Error ". I'm on tour in EU and a bit desperate to sort tomorrow's route but it's impossible.

This is usually the best place! All was working fine for me and the automatic checker wasn't flagging any issues, but there were a few reports in the server logs so I've restarted it and all is fine for now.
In general, if you can say exactly what you were doing when the error came up, that helps me narrow it down – cycle.travel is quite a lot of moving parts all working together (website, four routing engines, website map display, app map display, placename lookup, PDFs and extra map services, probably some others I've forgotten) so it's good to know which one I should be looking at.
Many thanks Richard....I too was having a problem accessing one of my journeys but all seems to be working fine now.
Are you trying the app or the website?
Using cellular/data or WiFi?
Are other applications/websites working as normal?
Some things you could try:
Using data instead of Wifi (or vice versa)
if using a VPN, disable it temporarily.
For the website, try a different browser.
Wen site. Many different pages caused Internal Server Error. Even loading the forum did. Loading a route. Often saving a route reported "No Saved ...". Worst was after "Stay Nest" and tapping on a site shown and get the white button blank box which then just froze (no error reports, just blank box).
Very frequent. Unable to sort out routes (and a bit desperate on campsite needing to sort tomorrow and no idea if Richard out of contact for extended time or is servers report issues automatically directly, etc.)
Thanks for sorting.
Re other questions. Tried WiFi and mobile data, same. Same with or without VPN. Didn't try other browser.
You missed: Are other applications/websites working as normal? In other words, is this an issue unique to CT?
'Clearing the cache' is often recommended when things don't work as they should. Instructions vary depending on OS.
How is the memory on the phone (I presume you're on a phone)? As the memory fills up a phone can act ..... interestingly.
Can you not use the app to plan a route?
I'm sure you're feeling quite stressed but it looks like you're in NL? Well that's not so bad. Practically everyone speaks English, they have a pretty good cycling network with lots of signs and information boards (take a photo) .... and practically no hills to worry about. If ever there was a place to have a internal server error I can think of few better places! :-)
If there is something you specifically need (information about campsites etc.) why not post what you need here and maybe we can share it with you?
Sorry, yes everything else working fine, all other websites no problems, other internet apps (eg weather apps, RSS readers, etc. all working fine e. Specific to CT which was returning an "Internal Server Error" (which kind of suggests where the issue lies?)
The feature re campsites is the "Stay Near Route" feature in cycle.travel which is very dependent on the route. But also route wasn't working properly and could mot "Send to Garmin"
Memory on phone is fine. Storage not so relevant but loads. Internal RAM fine as it's not even trashing then reloading background tabs )the first sign of RAM limits being reached)
But could people here really tell me which campsites along route possibilities are reasonable price, not too resorty, etc. given I might be adjusting my route whilst looking, in rural Netherlands?
The "everybody speaks English" might be true in west/central but eg couple of days ago 1st 3 campsites I telephoned spoke no English. 4th did speak English.
But given Richard found error reports in the server logs and given somebody else posted to this thread about having issues I think ghat narrows it down a bit.
In the part of NL where I currently am cycle infrastructure isn't quite what most people think of in NL eg today one section ½ mile cycle path was 6" wide. Another 1 mile just 1"-2" deep crushed shells, complete nightmare and I struggled to manage 4 mph and that was really hard work, 1 miles taking 20 mins (and that was part of an LF route).
I stop to say hello to most dogs and a lot of those humans on the other end of the leads speak not enough English to be of much use.
@HobbesOnTour. The underlying concern is that I assume Richard has holidays, travels places. Maybe the server reports errors to him automatically maybe it doesn't (my web servers don't) so potentially could be days before Richard becomes aware or in a position to resolve. And were that the case I would have needed to sort something quickly given what I'm doing and it's very poorly signed (lots of junctions with no signs).
Fine, I'll butt out.
I have no problem accessing the site, on phone or website and looking at the Journeys page other users have been using the planner - even around the time you did.
I know diddlysquat about tech but I do have some experience plotting routes on the fly. Lots of different things can get in the way.
Good luck. It's an adventure!
I have an automatic alert (UptimeRobot) set up to tell me if the site goes down. In this case I think it was intermittent but I’ll see if there’s any monitoring that could catch that. Over the past couple of months I’ve been migrating various parts of cycle.travel to a newer server (you might notice that placename lookups have recently got much faster, for example!) and the website itself is next on the list.
@Richard Fairhurst. In my case (above) it was variable
1. sometimes eg tapping on campsites to get the site detains it was hanging with a blank white box
2. Sometimes it was returning the "internal server error" web server page
3. Sometimes when saving a route it would take a fair time then popup message that the route was not saved due to "error"
So I guess some of the above would not have been detected by UpTimeRobot but the "Internal Server Error" would/should have been.
On my personal site I have two UpTime Robot checks running. One a basic (minimal) html page to check the web server is running. The other a mote complex WordPress page ghat in effect checks the database, php, etc. are running OK
ps. I just realised I never said that since servers restarted it's been working fine (sorry, that should have been my first response <embarrassed face emoji thingy>
I think this is an issue with Phusion Passenger, which is the glue between the webserver (Apache) and the website itself (written in Ruby). I’m hopeful that moving to a newer server will mean a newer, and less buggy, version of Passenger. But that also means migrating the whole Postgres database and that always gives me the wobbles…
@Richard Fairhurst If you want to setup a beta site using the new server under a different domain (or subdomain) I'm happy to use that as issues would be very apparent and if it’s a different/sub domain I can easily revert to the old site to achieve my route. Might not be relevant but if it is, happy to help try it (as at the moment I'm probably using quite a few different elements (routing with loads of via points, "Stay Near", Downloading gpx, Send to Garmin, etc.)
Happening again. Existing saved route opened OK but try and move the finish and short delay (inage upload doesn't seem to be working) "pop-up dialog "Internal Server Error. Please try again later".
