I do not like paved paths/cycleways, is there a clickeable I can click to ask the routing to only put me on paved roads? I've probably scene this before but cannot find now. Thanks.

That's a rather "left field" request, as it's not exactly the core ethos of what CT is trying the offer!

If I recall Richard's response to a previous query, choosing the Night option (at top left of the website map) will tend to have the effect of avoiding cycle paths, as it tries to stick to routes with lighting.

The problem with cycle paths in the UK is that they very often have unrecognizable entrances or are over grown not fit for cycling or take the cyclists far away from a more direct route which all in all is not that bad to ride along. It would be a worlds' difference in a more robust cycling climate such as France, for instance.

Left field? Not really. Thinking out of the box is often preferable. Core ethos or not.

Ken - firstly, the remark was meant partly in jest. But surely you would agree CT's routing algorithm seems mostly about finding routes that stay away from traffic? I find it will often take a less direct  route as a result, and via points are the CT users' friends in customising the default routing to suit preferences. Shortcomings of UK's cycle networks are a different issue.

Ken, if you click on 'My', you'll see 'Travelogues' which includes any threads you start here. There, you can see the answer to the question the last time you asked it.

Out of the box? Try a motorcycle route planner.

"There, you can see the answer to the question the last time you asked it. "

First time to ask that question for me, as far as I recall. Is there a limit?

Ken - on re-reading this thread, I wonder if my abbrevaation "CT" - meaning to refer to Richard's splendid website etc - has caused confusion with the unrelated organisation Cycling Uk (formerly the CTA, I think). Your concerns re shortcomings of UK bike paths etc would certainly be relevant matters for CUK ....

I don't wish to criticize anyone's preference, but it is important to use cycle paths where they are provided.

In my area, National Highways have announced their intention to demolish a footbridge (also allowed for cyclists) over a dual carriageway, citing Strava heat maps as evidence that the bridge is little used. National Highways is also the organization that gave us "smart" motorways, and the £300 million M3-A34 junction improvement at Winchester. So, with cycle paths, use them or lose them.

"First time to ask that question for me"

You asked the same question in January: https://cycle.travel/post/7687

Looking at your profile, it looks like you've been on some epic rides since you've been in the UK btw :)
