Hi!

First of all; thanks for a great app and site! I’ve used many nav apps and yours is really, really nice!

I tend to do long cycling days so battery usage is a thing. I’m very happy with the dimming between turns! But the map is bright and could save a lot of energy on oled screens if the background was darker. Also this would help with sunny days and visibility. Do you have plans to add a high contrast map or “dark mode”? Or is there a another solution?

Thanks in advance and greetings from the Netherlands, Joost

Glad you like it!

Yes – there will be a dark background map coming up and it’ll look like this:

I haven’t finished work on it yet but you get the general idea.

Joost,

There is a solution that I tried this summer in the Netherlands. I too need navigation for a day and like to be able to see the screen in the sun. I bought a BigMe Android phone that has a colour eReader screen. This was able to last for over 1 day and the more sun the easier the screen was to read.

On the first day of riding I went from Hoek van Holland to Arnhem. I used the phone offline as I had downloaded the maps and had stored the GPX rounte on the phone.

The cycleways in NL were really good and when I used the FietsSnelWeg I thought I must be in heaven.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the phone tip, e-reader screen sounds perfect! I’m going to check it out! That’s a really nice trip. How did the ferry go? I’ve once took the ferry from Ijmuiden to Newcastle to do the C to C and liked it.

Ciao Joost

Brian, I’ve just checked the phone and it seems to be a very good solution! Can you tell more about your experiences with it? Was the ghosting irritating? Hoe did it compare to a ‘normal’ phone? Thanks again for the tip!

I’m very happy to hear “dark mode” is coming. Dim between turns is still pretty problematic for me, and I think dark mode will achieve almost the same battery result on OLED phones. (I hope that the dark mode will include a dark control section at the bottom of the display.)

As an aside, I found that “classic invert” accessibility setting on iPhone will give a pretty reasonable dark mode in the meantime. But it’s a bit cumbersome to switch modes and can’t be automated.

Dim between turns now causes my camera app to dim as well. I think this is new-ish behavior.
steps to reproduce:

  • Turn on dim between turns
  • Ride, wait for screen to dim
  • Launch camera (I use the camera control button on iPhone 16)
  • Note that camera app display is dim
  • iOS 18.6.2, iPhone 16 pro, c.t app 1.9
  • Workaround: Lock the screen and unlock to reset screen brightness (this workaround has always worked for me with stuck dimming)

Thanks Brad, using iOS's classic invert is a very good tip!

I've automated it with the shortcuts app. I've made two shortcuts one turning classic invert on and one turning it off. Then I made two automations in the shortcuts app. One gets triggered when the CT app is turned on, and one when it's turned off (search for "app" in the automations tab) and assigned the shortcuts to these. It works great! Thanks again!

Ah, thanks for the tip! The key part was to create toggle classic invert using a separate shortcut. It cannot be done within the automations tab, which is where I got stuck.
