Hi there,
I use cycle.travel to plot routes and send them to Garmin Connect and onto my 840 and 965 Garmin devices for navigation. I have prepared a whole cycle tour starting next Sunday and I am thinking that if I relied on Garmin for navigation I’d be totally lost because today Garmin has had a world meltdown on certain devices like my 965.
I have the cycle.travel app on my phone and it allows you to download maps. When you have the map on your phone does cycle.travel need cell data to work or does it work from gps like Navmi does. I only have 12gb allowance from my network for my trip so I’d be concerned it would max out if I was using data for navigation.
Does anyone know if it uses gps or data?
Thanks
Tom

Tom, I'm not familiar with Garmin but it should be possible to load routes directly to the unit either by cable or Bluetooth. In any case, I'd doubt that any outage will last too long.
On topic, to answer your question, the CT app will work completely offline IF the relevant maps and routes have been downloaded in advance.

Truth be told, public WiFi is commonly available.
If you're not aware, using a phone instead of a dedicated unit has certain disadvantages & risks.
It's battery intensive. There's always a risk of damage (and loss of communication) in a crash. Sunlight, heat, cold and rain can affect display, functionality and battery life. In certain places it can attractive to thieves.
Thanks kindly for that. I do prefer to use my Garmin devices but I was thinking as a plan B it would be good to have when Garmin fails. Yesterday certain Garmin devices like my 965 crashed to the blue triangle booting up screen and that lasted for hours until I found a fix online. If that happened next Tuesday on a remote tour I’m doing I’d be really stuck as there is no cell signal. Map and compass! 35 years ago I cycled all over Europe for 8 months with a large scale Michelin map and compass 😂
Just for giggles, I am going to offer that I meticulously plan my routes in advance and always use cue sheets attached to my handle/aero bars and not once in ##### years of cycling have the cue sheets ever crashed.
