I'm a bit of a late adopter, just installed the app on my iPhone.

I've selected on of my existing routes and wish to export a .tcx of it, so I can send it to my Wahoo.

I routinely do this by opening the website on my phone, however the app only offers to expert to a GPX track.

Am I trying to do something that the app can't do please? Maybe the answer is to move from exporting as .tcx to .gpx track?

Graham, I have android so it may not be the same for you.

If I want to export a tcx route created on the app i can tap the "save" button, (ignore the "Export GPX track" option), select "Open on web"which will bring me to the CT website on the phone. From there, it's the usual process to download the tcx version of the route.

Thanks HobbsOT.

I was able to replicate your process exactly, so the app links to the version of the website that's available on a phone.

I'll try the app out for turn by turn instructions however imagine the app would be of most benefit to those who prefer to use a phone for navigation rather than a dedicated GPS device. Am I missing anything please?

I'd have a tendency to agree with you. At the moment, there is nothing available on the Android app that is not available on the website. (I think the iOS version may have a broader POI capability?)

I have a GPS unit and have been trying to test out the app over the last few months. However, and absolutely no disrespect to Richard or CT, I don't think I'd ever seriously consider using a phone all the time. It's handy at times, a great and familiar backup and certainly more intuitive to use than any other apps I've tried before but the advantages of a dedicated device for long days or long tours are just too strong.

At its core, CT creates interesting and safe routes with light traffic and useful information on surfaces and climbing for app and unit. I think we're very lucky to have both.

The app is absolutely intended as a complement to the website rather than a replacement. I think a big screen and mouse/trackpad control are much more conducive to detailed planning than a little touchscreen, so I haven’t attempted to recreate all the planning features on the app.

Instead, it’s very much meant to be “cycle.travel on your handlebars” – something to give you c.t’s directions and mapping as you ride. If you’re already happy with a dedicated GPS unit then do keep using that!

That said, I think TCX export would be worth adding and (hopefully) not too difficult: I’ll add it to the list.

(It’s worth noting that the “Dim between turns” setting on the app makes a big difference to battery life for multi-day tours. I had this enabled when riding my most recent tour, and the phone would easily last out the day. )

Thanks for clarifying Richard.

It was simple curiosity as a new app user that prompted my question as opposed to having a problem I wished to solve. However, being of a curious nature, I did an experiment. For a route I already have on my account:

I counted up and it takes me 14 finger taps to create a tcx on my phone using the mobile website. But just 6 create a gpx on the phone app.

8 extra finger taps isn't the end of the world for me but maybe it's the difference between slick and clunky for somebody doing an evaluation. Who knows?

I realise the file types are different, however the 14 to 6 taps is what I guess it would be to create a tcx from the app, if tcx functionality was implemented. If that were the case, I'd use the app every time for the process of getting a tcx onto my Wahoo.

Hope that makes sense, and is useful.
