Route naming and nomenclature

cycle.travel is an excellent site thank you.

I've noticed a couple of inconsistencies -

1. I have a route I renamed. In the Journey list (https://cycle.travel/by/shane_white/journeys?page=2&order=name) it's named 'Prospect Hill Dry' (new name). When viewing the Journey map, it's named 'Harvey Rd Dry' (old name).

2. The site seems to interchange Route and Journey. There's a Journey list, Journey map, but on the left hand side there's Route Summary and Route tools. Shouldn't a single name be given to both (Journey or Route)?

Thanks,

Shane.

Btw, that should be 'D Prospect Hill Dry' sorry - I used a prefix to group Journeys into regions since I couldn't see any other method.

Shane, I can't comment on the naming other than the 'real' name is a number evident in the URL.

However, there is a more user friendly method to organise routes - Folders!

On your 'My Journeys' page click on 'Add' on the right hand side. Name your folder, then move your existing files.

As an added bonus you can display your individual routes on one map ( up to 25 for non subscribers)

A very useful feature!

Shane, coming back to the naming...

1. I have a route I renamed. In the Journey list (https://cycle.travel/by/shane_white/journeys?page=2&order=name) it's named 'Prospect Hill Dry' (new name). When viewing the Journey map, it's named 'Harvey Rd Dry' (old name).

How did you save/rename the route? I've just checked and using the 'save with a different name' option there is no issue.

The naming is probably a caching issue – the site remembers bits of pages from one view to the next so that it can show them to you faster, and sometimes an old name can stick around. Don‘t worry unduly – if you’ve renamed it then the new name is what’s stored against your route.

It should all be ‘Journey’ but I slip up sometimes!

Thanks for your replies - the folder feature will be useful. I think I'll have to start paying for this site.

Regarding the naming of my 'D Prospect Hill Dry' Journey, I first tried refreshing its map page, but the name 'Harvey Rd Dry' remained. Then I deleted all cycle.travel cookies, logged back in, and that didn't work either.

Strangely, when the Journey's map is first opened, the correct name *does* appear for a brief moment (half a second?) and then it reverts to 'Harvey Rd Dry'. Weird.

I renamed it (and others) from the Journey list -

Yep, it’s caching on the server rather than in your browser. I think I can see what this particular issue is so will try to tweak it.

Thx Richard. I've found server caching an ambiguous pain to setup, so good luck.

I see I've lost what I think is about half my Journeys, but maybe it's due to the work you're doing so I'll leave the site for a while.

Shane, I don't think you've 'lost' any journeys - it's just that the routes you have allocated to folders are now only visible when you click on the folder, on the right of the screen.

Unallocated routes are displayed on the left.

Thanks, I was aware that those allocated to folders were moved, but the list you've displayed was not there earlier. I *can* see it now though, so all cool.

Also just letting you know the caching issue remains. Not a biggie, just a little annoying.

What I love about this site is the routing - I tried all the competitors except Strava (they wanted a cc) side by side, and every one of them sent me down stroads. Only cycle.travel chose a sensible route.

If you get time, streetview Unley Rd in South Australia, Glen Osmond Rd and Portrush Rd. All competitors (including Komoot) selected them simply because our state government painted a supposed "bike lane" on the left. Glen Osmond Rd has been deemed by the same government a preferred semi truck route and their bike lane is so narrow that their bike symbol doesn't fit in it! Sure, I've digressed, but it's burnt a hole in my gut. Here's Portrush Rd, which Komoot will send you down - note the bike symbol and truck.

I'm unable to rename any routes now?

I'm just working on a few things at the moment – may be a little sporadic for the next hour or two.

It's fine now thanks Richard.
