We are planning to cycle the Way of the Roses this Sept. We would need to take the Northern line back to London. But you can't reserve for bikes. How accessible are the first come first serve places on the train? I'm starting to think we will be on the train platform in Bridlington all day waiting for a train with room for our bikes....

Mairead, since this is a forum focused on CycleTravel, you may find a wider audience on the 2 main UK fora: CycleChat and Cyclink UK. In fact, the Cycling Uk forum has a dedicated thread for all things UK train travel with bikes.
Hi Mairead,
I find the National Rail journey planner less than useful. Also, any of the train company websites are equally poor when trying to reserve bike spaces.
Try the Trainline app. It will tell you if reservations are required, how many are available and which carriage they are in. I do use the National Rail app to check live departures, that sometimes shows the formation of the trains with carriage numbers and which ones are bike carriages.
One wrinkle with booking bike spaces is that you must collect physical tickets from a station. You cannot use tickets on an app. This is because you get a voucher that must/should be attached to the bike.

Mairead. I used to live in the East Riding. The trains south from Brid go to Hull. You could then try the magnificent Hull trains service to London - if only to hear their call for breakfast. (‘Oo’s for a butty!?). Seriously, I always found the staff very helpful.
The other thing I should have said is that I never had any problem with putting a bike on the Bridlington train. No one ever seemed to be counting.
