I am planning a longer cycling journey and have been playing with cycle.travel to learn the features and plan the route. The tool is both simple and really powerful.
I am having some issue with markers, and I half suspect its user error. I use the website map to create a route and on that route I can place, label and describe a location using the markers. That all works great. I save the map.
When I call up the map on my iOS app, I get the route. Sometimes I get the markers, sometimes I dont. When I do get the markers I cannot tap on the marker to get the name or description. I see the marker (star, camera, coffecup) but its just an artifact, no information.
Today I cannot get the markers I set on 622415 (Cayucos-Baywood). There are two midroute I set as a test. They dont show in iOS.
Today I can get the markers I set on 624404 (Day 1). All the markers appear to be there, but I cannot get their info from iOS app.
What am I doing incorrectly? I've tried deleting/recreating, making them public/private/thisjourney.... This hasnt happened to me suddenly, I've had this issue for a couple of weeks, but I've been working on it intermittently. I'd really love to get the info out of the markers, because ... its pretty useful. :-)
Thanks so much for any help.

Matt, I'm not sure that it's user error.
A couple of threads down from yours there's mention of work being done on the markers recently: https://cycle.travel/forum/thread/6246
I've tried to open both the routes you specify (622415 & 624404) and cannot do it. If they are marked as 'Private' that would be the reason (and may possibly have an effect on the display of markers). Under 'My Journeys' check the glasses symbol - sunglasses are private.
I use Android and I can see that some of my markers are not displaying in the app. It seems that these are the ones labelled as 'Public'. The Private ones seem to display as expected (I have a lot of markers!) IOS may be different as the updating process is different for both versions.
However, these do not seem to be editable - I can only use them to navigate to, from or via although the text box does show what I have in the text field of the marker.
Depending on how you intend to use the marker function, I can suggest two options to give more confidence in the short term.
First of all, all the markers (public/private) will be available to see (and edit) on the mobile version of the website. It's no harm to be familiar with that option. If you want to see what markers are close to you and the app isn't showing them all, fire up the mobile website, hit the 'location' button and the map will zoom in on your location. The markers will be visible. Of course, you'll need internet connectivity for that.
The second option is to create viapoints on the route and write a note to yourself to supplement the markers. If using a gps device or pdfs this note will appear as a turn by turn direction. (So far as I know they do not currently show up in the app - am open to correction). In this way, we can have a reminder of something on route (last café for 50 km) or off route (campsite 5km on right).
I hate to be pedantic, but it's no harm to be aware that 'saving the map' suggests to me the 'downloading' of the map (of an area) for offline use. This is not a route (or Journey in CT parlance). The route should be downloaded (not just 'saved') in addition to the map for full offline use. Maps can be downloaded under 'Settings' (look for 'Offline Map') and routes downloaded by selecting the route and holding. In this way your phone app will have full, offline functionality. However, it looks like markers are not saved with the downloaded map - Android)
Thank you very much for your response. You aren't pedantic, correct use of terminology is pretty important.
I have made two different routes public. On 631861, all the markers are 'public'. On 624404 I've made a mix of 'private' and 'this journey only'. When I then call these up in the iOS app I most often get nothing. In some cases I get some but not all. If there is a difference, its that when I download a route then no markers show at all (this appears to be consistent with your experience with Android).
Routes on the online map from the phone works fine, just like it does from the terminal. If I had to settle for having a marker that didnt communicate anything, and I had to flip to the online map to get the info, that would be OK. But the fact that markers come and go with no pattern is odd.
I appreciate there is a lot going on behind the curtain and perhaps these observations help debug. If I can help let me know.
Matt, just FYI
On 631861 I can see no markers when I open the route, either on the app or on the website.
On 624404 I can see 1 marker, a coffee cup (Cafe area, west of Apulia)) on both the app & website.
It seems that the inconsistency of the display of the markers is the key issue. Why sometimes display and sometimes not? Is it like I noticed and that there is a difference between displaying Public & Private markers?
Just on this (and back to terminology again...)
I was referring to downloading a map, not a route for the app. I did a test to see if a map area that included markers not associated with any specific route would display those markers in offline mode. I deleted the map area (It had already been downloaded) then downloaded it again so that it would have the most up to date info). Switching the phone into airplane mode I could open the map but see no markers.
Thanks for the report!
There is certainly a bug in the iPhone app at the moment where certain markers won’t show at all. Of the ones you’ve saved then this will affect the bike icon, but not the attraction, star or cafe ones.
Other than that I’m not quite sure, but I’ll have a bit more of a poke around. It’s worth noting that if you create a new public or private marker on the website, the app doesn’t magically know you’ve done that. It asks the site occasionally “are there any new markers?”, but you can tell it to refresh by clicking the Refresh icon (a bit like ↪) at the top right of the Routes display.
I’m finishing up an update to the iPhone app right now and could potentially throw an in-progress version your way to see if it fixes this.
My trip is multiday and I am not yet halfway through making all the routes, so I will keep testing. If there is a test case you want to run, let me know. Will run and report. I appreciate the tips and tricks this is much more interesting than the day job.
