I can send a route to my friend and she can see it on her phone but it will not allow her to download the route to use offline. How can we do this please?

Bill, check that the route is not private.
I'd suggest that your friend open the route on the website and save it to their account.
They open the app, locate the route, select it and download. (They should probably download the appropriate map(s) as well.
Alternatively, if they use the app, email them the gpx of the route and they should be able to click on it and open it with the CT app.
