I've used the app for first time with my phone and was super impressed.  Only problem was fast-draining of battery so that it only lasted about 75 mins. Not ideal as can't be sure will have opportunity to recharge en route etc.  What can I do to extend charge usage?  Would turning off mobile data help and will the app work without it?

Many thanks for any tips.

Turning off data will definitely help. You can download both the basemap and your route ahead of time:

  • To download the basemap, go to “Settings” and “Offline map”, then click the square(s) you want
  • To download a route, find it in your routes list, and then either long-press (Android) or swipe to the side (iPhone) and choose the download option.

(You can’t plan routes offline, however.)

Also in the Settings screen is an option to “Dim screen between turns”. This will black out the screen, only lighting up either side of a turn (or if you go off-course), which can save a lot of battery.

On iPhone you can leave the app while navigating, so that the phone goes to sleep, and it’ll continue to give directions. The Android app doesn’t do this yet.

Aside from the CT app, it's a good idea to check that no other apps are running. Anything non-essential will add to battery usage.

Another tip is to disable Wifi - a phone constantly searching for WiFi will drain quicker.

Screen brightness can also be an issue. Brighter screens demand more power.

Batteries can degrade with usage and age too so bear that in mind. I've often found on older (Android) phones that the last 20-30% can disappear very quickly.

A backup powerbank can be a great way to give peace of mind.
