Hi Richard, I like the idea of travel tiles. I have this enabled and note that some tiles have recently been populated on my account. I use cycle.travel to plan all my long distance routes and some shorter routes but then upload them to my Garmin 830 device. I prefer to use my Garmin to navigate and keep my phone switched on but don't use the cycle.travel app for guidance. How does the mapping/software update the travel tile? Does my phone need to switched on and the cycle.travel app and route need to be running?

Norman, according to the supporter's newsletter (March 31) the app must be active:
Yep, that’s right. I am planning to add an option to manually upload a GPX file and light up those travel tiles, but it’s slightly complex because at present the syncing is only one way – i.e. any tiles you collect on the app go to the website, but not the other way round.

Might be useful to note the inverse of your enquiry can also happen ie unwanted hexagons.
From experience, you just need the app to be open, ie it doesn't need to be following a route. And you don't need to be riding either ! If works whenever the app is active (and the tiles setting has been selected). So if perhaps while you travel by train you log in to dream up some new routes, the hexagons you are currently passing through will be populated... So good to be aware that on the app, if you do a "long press" on the map over an unwanted hexagon, you get an option to delete it.
Thanks for your comments. Very helpfull
