Piers, for a trip of that length I'd use the website rather than the app. Simply enter start & end points, select 'Routes' and CT will plot a route using only signposted cycle paths. If it's not using the cycle routes you prefer, simply adding viapoints and moving them to the correct one(s) will fix that.
This is also possible on the app with a similar process.
