When opening any file from a file browser on Android (for example, .pdf - or any other extension), cycle.travel is registered with the OS as a handler for that file type whether or not it can parse it. Is it possible to limit cycle.travel's registration with the OS as a file handler for only the types it supports (.gpx, I suppose)?

I have the same problem on Android as well!
Developing for Android can be really frustrating sometimes!
cycle.travel does indeed register as only a file handler for .gpx files, but it turns out that this only works properly if you also specify a particular file signature (‘MIME type’). I think I’ve now got this working and it should be fixed in the next release.

I have the same problem. On android mobile phone clicking on Word or PDF files in Gmail opens cycle.travel. If I remove cycle.travel app from the device the files open correctly. I look forward to the fix! Thank you.
