The trains to Salisbury were uneventful, thank goodness. Previous mishaps have included the rail system in eastern Yorkshire being outed in a storm and announcement that the train will miss my station.

In Salisbury the 45 route was found and the Avon valley was navigated. I stopped at The Bridge for coffee and noted that the South is embracing inflation better than the North. Next I climbed onto the Chalklands where there was much military activity. The very steep downhill into Pewsey  excited me and tested the bike. Pass with honours!

Barge inn at Honeystreet reached at 32 miles .Some food? in the pub. Excellent beer, and excellent company. Topics included class, colonel Gaddafi and the death of liberalism. Sleep

Day 2 Honeystreet to Sapperton

a great sleep was had and I found I was still living in an apparent liberal democracy. Just past the Barge over the canal bridge is a wonderful cafe called Honeystreet cafe. Cycle tourists know a second breakfast is something that we do.

This cafe had a BLAZING LOG FIRE, it was about 6 deg C outside and most welcome. the thick superb coffee and well cooked veggie food was finished -- so back out into the cold.

The steep hill before Avebury tested  the Bosch engine and me and we were greeted by stones ancient and at least 5 school parties. The type I was leading 6 months before retirement. The rings are wonderful but I pressed on over the Ridgeway. a superb feeling of openness and cold freedom.

Down to Swindon where i got lost, then to Cricklade where a cafe would not serve me after 4pm. and a charge of the battery in Cirencester Neros. Thanks people.
