If he has his own cycle.travel account, you can give him the link for that route – https://cycle.travel/map/journey/534577 – and he can click 'Save' to save it to his own account. It will then be accessible from the app on his iPhone.

Sorry to test your patience but am I right in presuming that the number associated with the above route 534577 is assigned by the system/ If so, where do I find it when that happens?

When you load or save a route, the address in your browser’s address bar changes – you can just copy that address and give it to your friend.
