Some routing problems in Sardinia

I think I've been confusing travelogue posts with forum posts.

Over the last week I've posted some travelogue notes on our route from north to south along the Sardinian west coast, highlighting some route problems.

The most important one concerns the impassability of the Sardinian Cycleway CS13 into Cagliari from the airport.

The next most important concerns some backroad routing problems between Porto Torres and Alghero.

(Despite these problems, we had a (mostly) great 6 days of riding and have made it safely to Sicily.)

Thanks! That’s really helpful, and sorry you encountered trouble with the gates and the missing bridge.

Most of this appears to stem from issues with OpenStreetMap data (cycle.travel’s source mapping) in Sardinia, with the surfaces and gates being incorrectly marked or not marked at all. I’ve just fixed these issues in OSM and that’ll show through in c.t with the next mapping update.

The CS13 situation is slightly more complex. It was marked in OSM as “no access” but also “bike route”, which shouldn’t coexist – if there’s no access then there can’t be a bike route.

As far as I can tell, the Sardinian cycle routes aren’t yet signposted on the ground – the comments here suggest some work is underway but that it’s running late. So for now I’ll put in a manual override to stop c.t considering them as cycle routes until there’s some evidence they really exist.

Thanks Richard.  Yes, I can confirm a lack of signage along most of the route.

However, the one section that was signposted and appeared to be a constructed cycleway was the kilometre or so from Giliacquas to the burnt-out bridge. It was signposted as a cycleway, but there were no signs indicating that it was closed ahead.  The burnt-out bridge (and a burnt-out rest area with a burnt bicycle rack) had an air of arson.

I really doubt the viability of  the mapped CS13 route to/from Cagliari, given that Trenitalia have invested a lot of money in high-security fencing preventing access to a long section along the railway line south of Via Girolamo Emiliani, with no obvious alternative route along that corridor.
