This was suggested in a route I planned between St Albans and Stevenage (https://cycle.travel/map/journey/321322.) It's not a nice road - fast, notorious for crashes and close passes. I never use that road. Most direct alternative is not on OSM - it is an upgraded footpath, decent width, compacted sub-base, from the edge of Sandridge, across Nomansland Common to just opposite Dyke Lane. The surface is better than Sheepcote Lane, which forms part of the suggested route.
Otherwise, I go around via Beech Hyde Lane (I tend to come back this way) or via Amwell. Brewhouse Hill in Wheathampstead is quite steep.
