2 miles, 10-15 minutes. Easy: Cycle lanes and quiet roads, with two traffic light crossings. A route updated with local feedback and we've tested this and prefer it. You can preview the route on YouTube

Notes: Thornhill is the Park & Ride to East of Oxford.

* Start in front of P&R on cycle path and head west towards city.

* This merges on to a quiet 'service road' (London Road).

* Before the ring road, turn left onto Ridgeway Road, continue to the ring road crossing near Kiln Lane.

* Proceed down Trinity Road, past the Weyland Arms and left onto Quarry Hollow.

* Follow round onto Quarry Road and soon right on Mark Road.

* At the bottom, left on York Road then right on Rock Edge to enjoy the nature reserve.

* At the end, left on Windmill Road to turn right into Old Road at the traffic lights. On the far side, there is a cycle lane on the pavement, which runs to the hospital entrance on the left.

There are some issues with this route that need fixing, I'm afraid.

  • There are three possible choices to get to the other side of Risinghurst but near the roundabout is the worst option: the section of the service road near the Green Rd roundabout is often very busy with vehicles moving in and around McDonalds, not just the car park but on/off the pavement, and there's a blind corner. I don't trust many of the drivers who use that stretch and it would be very easy for an accident to happen there.    Instead, either 1) use the service road as far as Ridgeway Rd and then turn left up Ridgeway Road, and carry on to use the Headington Quarry crossing of the ring road opposite Trinity Rd, or 2) leave the service road even earlier, to connect up with the east end of Downside End (ting your bell before the blind corner though, to avoid crashing into a pedestrian), and then carry on along Downside Road, to arrive at the same Headington Quarry crossing of the ring road opposite Trinity Rd. This latter route is somewhat signposted as a cycle route to lead to ORC/hospitals.
  •  Any route involving Beaumont Rd (whether via Trinity Rd or not) involves an extremely nasty hill. You go down a dip and then you've a really steep climb to get out of the other side.  Plus you probably have several cars to negotiate past on narrow windy streets as you do so. Can't recommend those at ALL. There are no good routes through Headington Quarry; choose your least worst: 1)  Quarry High St only has one short section of incline, but there is a narrow section with cars parked on one side and have to negotiate with oncoming traffic as to who uses the remaining lane. Oh and the camber is too angled to use when it's icy.   2) goes via Trinity Rd and then through the churchyard, but you have to dismount through the church yard. But on the west side of the churchyard, there's a dedicated cycle/pedestrian route to reach Quarry Rd (no dropped kerb, so go through the parking area near the Coach House).  The second option is the least hilly and the churchyard is quite pleasant with some graves of famous people.
  • Mark Rd is better than Weyland Rd. I don't know why; it just seems less annoying when you're cycling it.
  • Go via Rock Edge to avoid having to turn right onto Old Rd, which can be quite a busy junction.  Besides, there is the most fabulous Rock Edge nature reserve there. The traffic lights with Windmill Rd/Old Rd are not great from either direction but you are liable to wait less time if you have come from the Rock Edge direction.

Thank you Sharon, I have updated the route based on your comments. I will test out some more of the options that you suggest and I may update it further.
