I completed a solo ride of this route in April & May 2026. It is very well collated and was a joy to cycle, although the weather conditions were challenging in places. As expected there were Road Closures, some with signed diversions and some not, but nothing insurmountable and some self-induced detours for accommodation etc. The ascent suggests 7,700m, but my experience was that it was about double that. Enjoyed this. Well done.
Well done that was a great achievement and something I'd like to do when I leave the current job. Just skim read your blog and have saved it for a proper read when I'm not faffing around like I am today. That was useful you listed the accommodation you used - I'm not a camper when cycling away - and what was most interesting (to me) was whether you booked ahead or not. How did you deal with (secure?) bicycle storage which always seems to be the part for me which takes quite a bit of analysis. Have seen also through other (motorcycle) reviews that NC500 accommodation is quite expensive. Did you have any mechanical issues?
I did LEJOG with three friends end May. The route cycle.travel picked was amazing - scenic and quiet. Lots and lots of miles on canal tow paths and old railway lines. 32mm tyres were perfect for it.
We had 2 D-locks between the four of us. Bit heavy but gave peace of mind when leaving bikes outside accommodation. Note if your using a bike transporter to take your bike home put your D-locks with the bikes. We had ours in carry-on and they were confiscated at Inverness airport security🤬.
By the way, if you're using hotels, pubs, hostels, you need to book well in advance, especially above Dunfermline as there are so few options. Start each day very early ( we started 6:30) so you have plenty of time for meals, coffee/cake stops and in case you have mechanicals. We were cycling 100 miles a day and got to our accomodation by 5-6pm. Enough time to shower, find somewhere to eat, and stock up food for next day. (2 tubs of ready mix porridge works well as there's always a kettle in the room)
