Altrincham to Dunham Massey

This little-known route needs some more signposts, but its easy:-

1. From John Leigh Park, take Oldfield Road westwards, away from the town.
2. Where Seamons Road curves to the right, bear left at the junction to continue along Oldfield Road.
3. As you walk or ride over Oldfield Brow, Oldfield Road narrows and becomes Oldfield Lane.  This is single track, with high hedges on both sides.
4. After passing the microbrewery on the right, you arrive in Dunham Massey village.

From here, you can explore the village, or cross B5160 Charcoal Road (carefully! Busy traffic) to the National Trust gardens, or head north to Dunham village.

Canal to Alty Leisure Centre

This uses Prestbury Avenue (quiet), then a little path alongside the railway/Metrolink lines which links to Daresbury Avenue.

From there, Clarendon Avenue takes you under the A560 flyover and on to Stockport/Oakfield Roads, to BikeShak, to the Leisure Centre, the new Altair development and Moss Lane. 

Useful for areas east of the town centre and the football ground.

Canal to Alty via A56

1. Follow the Bridgewater Way canal towpath to Broadheath, and exit by Halfords (WA14 5PZ).  Either take Viaduct Road or go through the car park past Dunelm homeware and Halfords (CARE: cars in car park).

2. Cross the A56 at Altrincham Bridge.  (CARE: No cycle path, very busy road, you may need to dismount and walk over the bridge).

3. Turn first left on to Navigation Road (CARE: Narrow road, can be busy with rat-running vehicles).

4. Just before the level crossing, turn right in to Grosvenor Road.  

5. Follow Grosvenor Road along the Metrolink line, under the A560 flyover.  

6. At the end, bear left on to A538 Stamford New Road (CARE: busy, no cycle lane), and in to Altrincham.

Canal to Alty

1. From the canal towpath, exit by Sinderland Brook, through the white chicane, and along the track to the end of Walton Road.

2. Cross the brook, head south along Frieston Road (quiet), past Park Road school.

3. Turn left at the end, on to the Park Road.  CARE: Busy road, no cycle lane.

4. Climb the bridge over the canal, and turn right on to Canal Road.  CARE: Poor potholed surface, narrow lane, speeding cars.

5. Follow Canal Road under the old railway bridge, past the houses and over the level crossing (Metrolink and Northern Rail).

6. Turn right on to Brook Avenue (quiet), and at the end, right again on to Brook Close. CARE: Poor potholed surface.

7. Right on to Wellington Road, over another level crossing (Metrolink and Northern Rail), then first left on to Grosvenor Road (usually quiet).

8. Under the A560 flyover, then at the end, bear left on to A538 Stamford New Road (CARE: busy, no cycle lane), and in to Altrincham.
