There are two options that I am aware of:
1. Use a gpx editor to split the route into manageable sizes. Import those. I've never done it.
2. Use CT's trace feature explained here: https://cycle.travel/post/4172 You can then create the route "on top" of the trace.
You should be aware that importing a file does not mean that you'll end up with an exact copy. The more complicated, the more off-road the original the greater the need for editing. Discussed here: https://cycle.travel/forum/thread/1882
