Underground, overground… cycling free?
The most eye-catching new cycleway in Britain for years, the Two Tunnels route plunges deep below Combe Down to take cyclists between Bath and the picturesque Midford Valley.
The old Somerset & Dorset Railway's tunnels and viaducts have been turned into a family-friendly bike route which combines with the Kennet & Avon Canal and Collier's Way to form a 12-mile, mostly traffic-free circuit. An unmissable ride.
Gentle music plays as you make your way through the well lit tunnels. Then, all of a sudden, you emerge into the peaceful Somerset countryside. There are pubs at Midford and nearby Monkton Combe (on the Collier’s Way return route) for refreshment.

This is a gem of the cycle network. I rode the route in July 2021 as part of a longer tour and had just done the Bristol-Bath cycle route which I had been looking forward to. It was great, but this was even better - the route is visually pleasing and the tunnels were an interesting experience to ride through. I have fond memories and will go back one day and experience it again. Well worth seeking out or making part of a longer tour.
