You could think of this as the A1 cycle route, broadly paralleling the Great North Road all the way from London to Peterborough.
It connects Home Counties towns such as Welwyn, Stevenage and Letchworth, with roughly half on rural roads and half on cycleways. Some of the early gradients can be steeper than you'd think, but it mostly levels out after Stevenage; from Peterborough to Spalding, of course, it's pancake-flat fenland.
There are a few gaps in the signposted route, notably between Letchworth and Sandy, and the presence of the A1 makes it challenging to find alternatives.
