Route 71 forms the western part of the C2C before striking off on its own towards the Yorkshire Dales. Confusingly, it has two alternate start points (at Workington and Cleator Moor near Whitehaven) and a number of off-road alternatives along its way. The famous C2C route connects railway paths, forest tracks and quiet lanes, but after this leaves at Penrith, NCN 71 is pretty much country roads all the way. The passage over the Yorkshire Dales is unforgettable, high moorland roads descending into Swaledale at Reeth.
