Probably the least ridden of the Northern coast-to-coasts, the 'W2W' is a hilly 155-mile exercise on country lanes.
Early views of Morecambe Bay give way to the stark moorlands of the North Pennines and the small-town charms of Kirkby Stephen and Barnard Castle (eye tests available). The later stages take in Durham and a succession of railway paths.
As long as you're prepared to put up with these trails and the gravelly Sleightholme Moor Road, we think this is well suited for the more athletic tourer or (with sturdy tyres) road cyclist: the scenery and solitude are certainly rewarding.
