Coastal cycle routes are at their best when untroubled by busy roads, and the Baltic Coast route in Germany delivers this perfectly.
From the Danish border at Flensburg to the Polish frontier near Stettin, it follows cycleways and smaller roads through a series of relaxed seaside villages. Circular diversions are signposted around the islands of Fehmarn and Rügen. Kiel is really the only city en route, though it passes close to Lübeck and Rostock.
The ride is also designated as route D2 of the German cycle network and you’ll see those signs along the way. In several locations the surface isn’t ideal for road bikes, so we’d recommend a touring bike as a minimum.
