EuroVelo 7 (Germany)

One of the lesser known EuroVelo routes, the ‘Sun Route’ takes an interesting but rarely challenging course through eastern Germany.

It’s very much a route of two halves. Starting on the coast at Rostock, it meanders south through the beautiful Mecklenburg Lake District along quiet roads, forest trails and roadside paths. This takes you to Berlin, where the route reaches right into the heart of the city before taking another waterside course out towards Potsdam. From here it’s a day’s ride through deep woodland to Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

Here the character of the route changes as we join the Elbe cycleway, one of Germany’s great river rides and always busy with cyclists. The scenery gets more interesting as you head upstream into the hills, while the historic city of Dresden is undoubtedly the main tourist draw.

The Elbe is easy to follow. From Rostock through Berlin, although much of the route is not yet signposted as EuroVelo 7, it largely coincides with national route D11. That said, loading the route onto your phone would be a wise precaution.
