Planning a "Round-Trip" day ride

I wanted to plan a "Round-Trip" day ride from Hilton (nr Appleby) to Castle Carrock (nr Carlisle).

I went to the iphone App and input 'Hilton Eden' for the start and 'Castle Carrock' for the destination; clicking paved only and Round-Trip. Route displayed looked OK so saved it (as Castle Carrock 1).

Opened the saved route in the App but the return leg is now shown as a straight line. Opened it in web page and its showing the return leg plotted so save it as Castle Carrock 2. Opened that version in the App and the return leg is again shown as a straight line

Start again in the App and get the route as before; click save but instead of saving I clicked 'open on web'. On the web page it now shows, for the northern section, the return leg and outward leg on the same line. Saved as Castle Carrock 3

On web page, opened Castle Carrock 1. and changed the first 7 miles using Via Points. This changed the Northern return leg to the same as the outward one (saved as Castle Carrock 4).

Start again in the App which gives the original route; add a via point to the North return leg and straight away the return leg merged with the outward route (as in Castle Carrock 4) ignoring the via point I'd placed

Decided to plot the route using the web page (not that easy on a small iphone). Web page doesn't recognise 'Hilton Eden' so click map for start instead and then click paved and Round-Trip before adding Castle Carrock as the destination. Gives the original plot; save it as Castle Carrock 5. Open it in the App - as saved. Add via points to amend the first 7 miles again and once more the return leg of the Northern section immediately merges with the outward leg.

Start again in the web page. Add a via point in the north return leg before amending the first 7 miles with via points - Success - save as Castle Carrock 6.

Don't know what I'm doing wrong to make it so tricky.

Didn't include links to saved routes as I don't feel confident enough but I could have a go if need be.

Apologies for such a long winded post

Inserting a "Not Via Point"

Firstly praise - In my view its far and away the best route planner for cycle touring in Britain, I've recently cycled from the Isle of Wight to the Black Isle (near Inverness); 3/4 of it pre-planned on the desktop, the last 1/4 on my i-phone as I went. For me its got the balance right between directness and quiet roads etc just right. In a 1000 miles the only hiccups were a bridge that had been swept away and a ford with a steep narrow footbridge.

My question: Is it possible to place a marker to exclude a section from a proposed route? For example, to avoid a section of the route that is too rough for me; another example is avoiding a ford (It may be in spate on arrival and anyway in the past I've come off in just 3" depth because of slippery surface). At the moment either I change to "Paved Only" or add a "Via Point" away from that section but that's telling it I want to go there when actually what I'm really wanting is CT  to choose the best route for me without the section/location in question. Is there a way I can currently do this? Thanks
