More adventurous routes?

I found this site very useful this week for getting an accurate gpx of an NCN route onto my Garmin, so thank you. However, is there a way to modify these touring routes so that I can, say, take in some mtb trails or bridleways along the way? The drag function throws a fit and sends me via Timbuktu every time I try to use it.
