Linha do Tâmega

The Tâmega Line - initially called the Tâmega Valley Railway - connected the Livração station (Marco de Canavezes), the Douro Line, to the Arco de Baúlhe station (Cabeceiras de Basto), in a total length of 51,733 kilometers.

On January 1, 1990, the entire commercial service between Amarante and Arco de Baúlhe, of this railway extension, was deactivated, thus giving way to a greenway intended for pedestrian, bicycle or any other non-polluting means.

In 2007 the Municipalities involved, Refer and the State signed a protocol that would result in the construction of the Ecopista da Linha do Tâmega, a road that crosses three Municipalities over almost 40 kilometers, Amarante, Celorico de Basto and Cabeceiras de Basto.

This Ecopista runs through one of the most beautiful railway lines in the country, allowing direct contact with the surrounding historical and natural heritage, namely the many villages and bridges it crosses in all its extension, the green landscapes of unparalleled beauty and the Tâmega River, former libris of this region, and which almost always accompanies, very closely.

This project, which is included in the European Network of Greenways, starts at km 12,467, in the city of Amarante, and ends at km 51,733 in the Cabeceirense Parish of Arco de Baúlhe.

Until 2012 only the Amarante Route was in operation, connecting the Princess of Tâmega to the Plate. With the inauguration of the Celorico de Basto and Arco de Baúlhe Routes, in 2013, the Ecopista da Linha do Tãmega is now complete.
