I decided I didn't fancy the ncn62/6 through manchester and discovered a country route south of same distance...

but OSM seems to have an erroneous (according to google) break in Chapel lane.

NB have you cycled the northernly off road bit before woodhead tunnel exit south of A628? Would it be OK for camping load on 1.75 slicks? The A628 looks unpleasant: surely the M67 should have been closed once the Motorway along a628 route was abandoned......

Thanks for the map tools.

Regards

A Bradley

I'd recommend against that bit of the trail, I'm afraid - I remember it being pretty rough even on a hybrid. Here's a pic of it: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/130240 !

Looks like someone has fixed Chapel Lane already and it'll be in the next cycle.travel map update (next week or two).

Arghhh: :) given the A628 is so heavily used by HGVs due to the M67 you would think that sustrans/TPT would have ensured the off road bit was suitable for all cyclists...

The Premier Inn at Rostherne/ Bucks Lane is still open :), thought there are other hotels on A50 to west of now de-trunked B5569: I was diverted along there because chapel lane bridge over new duelled A556  was closed:

Hotel receptionist said it was because they added cycle lanes then decided was too narrow for that...

NB also diversions around Rostherne (Chessire cycleway route 70).

NB going west I used the penultimate off road bit beside A628 (in rain): terrible: its was a steep rocky river with only a horse antimotorcycle gate midway so a 1 foot step for a Touring bike: I don't see how they can view this as a cycle route: better to put Cyclists Warning triangles and a 30mph limited with cameras between Dunford bridge-A628 junction and Longendale trail start. I thought the last section you mentioned sounded a bad idea and they seemed to be gaps in west bound traffic so I rode the road (its so narrow walking doesn;t look much help):  but I got overtaken badly by an HGV.  Bad driving persisted all the way along the B road to Glossop. Normal service was resumed after Glossop.

Is it worth putting a warning on that section: I would not go that way again: I think the TPT are being reckless in thinking of  it as  a cycle route.

NB I wore my brakes blocks out in a day due to peak grit :)
