Frequently Asked Questions
What phones does it work on?
The iOS version runs on any iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or later.
The Android version will work on an phone running Android 8.1 or later.
Does it work offline?
You can download maps and your planned routes to use offline.
- Downloading the base map: Use the Offline map option in the Settings menu to choose the areas you want. Contours and hillshading (for supporters) aren’t yet available offline but I’m working on it. Unfortunately the terms and conditions of third-party maps (e.g. Ordnance Survey) don’t allow us to offer these for download.
- Downloading previously planned routes: Go to the Routes list and find the route you want. On iPhone, swipe left and choose the blue down-arrow button. On Android, long-press the route name and choose from the menu.
How can I minimise battery use?
Use the offline maps option to download the maps for the area you want to ride.
Once you’ve planned your route (or loaded an existing route), turn wifi and mobile/cell reception off.
Use the “Dim between turns” option (in App Settings) – this turns the screen off between turns, lighting up again when it’s time to turn off.
What are the advantages of becoming a supporter?
First of all, you’re helping to keep the map and routing servers running, and enabling me to continue working on the website and app – for which thank you! You’ll also get these benefits on the app:
- Extra clear Wayfarer map style, with strong colours for roads and paths
- Map library with maps including Ordnance Survey, IGN France, and OpenCycleMap
- Contours and hill-shading on the map
- Sketch mode – draw your route in seconds by just dragging your finger*
- Find points of interest – look for cafes, pubs, bike shops, toilets, drinking water and more (and it works offline!)
- Tappable icons – tap symbols on the map for more details
You’ll also get the supporters’ features on the website too, including the extra maps and downloadable PDFs.
* Not yet available on Android.
