Without doubt, the Marches – the border region between Wales and England – are among the finest cycling territory in the country.

The rural country lane routes of the National Cycle Network don’t get as much press as the long-distance challenges, but they’re no less enjoyable. At 50 miles, the run from Chepstow to Hereford is a good day’s ride for the fit cyclist, or an enjoyable weekend if you like to take things slowly. And yes, there are hills – as there always are in the Marches. But the views are such, particularly north of Abergavenny, that it’s worth the effort.
